Fiesta Zetec Championship Almost Wrapped Up For Owen Purcell

Despite picking up his worst finish of the season, fourth in race three, series leader Owen Purcell all but wrapped up the 2018 Patch Tyre Equipment Fiesta Zetec Championship title at Mondello Park today, Sunday July 8th.

Purcell started the penultimate race weekend of the season knowing that he had the possibility of sealing his first ever Motor Racing Championship success with three strong results. Pole position for race one was the best possible start and he backed that up with a solid run to second place. Purcell’s fellow front row starter, Michael Fitzgerald, made the most of the points leader having one eye on the title to take his first win of the year, while Purcell had to overcome his closest challenger Mark Johnston to take a step closer to the championship.

The second race was more of a challenge for the front runners as the first six finishing positions from race one were reversed to form the race two grid. A poor start by Fitzgerald dropped him to fifteenth leaving Johnston and Purcell to battle to the front without him. The championship top two followed each other through the field until they reached second and third spots, before Purcell pounced to steal the runner-up position on the second last lap. Second would soon become another victory however, as the race winner, Colin Murray, was excluded for a technical infringement. While Purcell and Johnston finished first and second, Fitzgerald worked his way back to sixth to take pole position for race three.

Race three saw Fitzgerald make the most of pole to take a clear win, while Purcell and Johnston again had to battle through the grid. This time they were less successful as they could not overcome William Kellett, who took second with Johnston third and Purcell off the podium for the first time all year in fourth place.

The Patch Tyre Equipment Fiesta Zetec Championship heads onto the Mondello Park International Track for its final two races of 2018 on September 15th and 16th with Owen Purcell odds on favourite to take the title. All that he needs from the final double header is two points and the class will have a new champion.
