Georgian Davit Kajaia Joins Irish Legends Hunt for the Mondello 500

Georgian superstar Davit Kajaia will join the Irish Legends series at Mondello Park next weekend on July 7th and 8th. An impressive résumé of being a two-time French Legends Cars Cup champion, Legends SuperCup champion and TCR International race winner for Alfa Romeo means that the Irish Championship regulars will have their work cut out ahead of them. Kajaia has previous experience of racing against two of our drivers; Niki Meredith, who himself is making his season debut this weekend, and James Holman who both went wheel to wheel against the Georgian in the Acceleration Legends Super Cup back in 2014. They all shared the podium at the Nurburgring when Meredith came out on top, and at Monza where Kajaia pipped Holman by 0.002 of a second in a photo finish.

This weekend also sees the launch of the Mondello 500. Sponsored by Taylor’s Antiques and Stillorgan Motor Company, the overall top points scorer for the weekend will receive a special trophy and a €500 cash prize. Consistency is the name of the game in order to win the prize, with 6 races (3 on Saturday and 3 on Sunday) it is not going to be just about winning races, as the most consistent driver will take away the prize fund on offer.

It is expected to be our biggest grid of the season with a minimum of 12 cars expected to take to the circuit. Championship leader Paul O’Brien will look to take a big step in defending his crown for a 3rd successive year. 225 points behind is Geoff Richardson who will look to build upon his impressive victory at Anglesey whilst Johnny Taylor, who is 205 points behind Geoff, will be looking to close in at the front with 1200 points up for grabs over the weekend. Previous race winner Ian Conroy will be looking to mix it up at the front, whilst Gordon Brown will look to build on progress made at Kirkistown earlier in the season. Greg Richardson also returns to put the bad luck behind him that he’s suffered so far in the 2018 season. Also returning is Colm O’Sullivan, whilst Richard Kearney makes his season debut, ready to go after performing well at the end of the 2017 championship. Making his Legends debut at Mondello is Northern Irishman Robert Woodside, we look forward to welcoming him into the Legends family.
